Do you Really Need an Automatic Espresso Machine?
[ 29 Jul 2009]
Do you really need an automatic espresso machine? I’m pretty certain you would love to own one, but do you really need it? Heck YES!!
Coffee is now being touted as a viable antioxidant and that’s something we all don’t get enough of. Having your own home espresso machine is not a luxury anymore. With today’s high prices of coffeehouse drinks (plus the added expense of gas and your time standing in line) it’s actually a cost savings.

Espresso machines come in three basic types, each with their own benefits. They start with manual or Lever types, move into the Semi-automatic espresso machine, and end with the top of the line fully automatic models – more commonly called Super Automatic espresso machines.
Knowing the proper instructions for your chosen machine, they all make a great espresso. However, as you travel up the types of espresso machines, the ease of use gets better and better. Literally ending with Super Automatic cappuccino makers that are a “push of a button”. Just be aware that these will require you to master programming them first.
Most Espresso experts usually hold to the opinion that the manual style is the best way to go. Just remember – these are the pros and they are trained in the art of espresso making. These Espresso experts understand the minute details of how the right temperature, tamping, coffee grinding, technique to pull the perfect shot, milk frothing, and more combine. So accept that you might be envious and that your limitations are part of the learning process. But NEVER forget that you will soon experience the same pride when you produce that perfect shot!
If I can push a button and create similar results as a trained coffeehouse Barista, you better believe that you can too. When I started years ago I didn’t even like coffee nor know how to turn the machine on. What difference did frothed milk make to your cappuccino were my thoughts during the barista training. Coffee is coffee, right? Absolutely wrong, as my career has shown me on a daily basis. There are some simple basic truths you just can’t avoid.
You don’t have to devote all your time to learn all everything there is to know so you can produce the perfect espresso shot. You just have to be willing to make mistakes (yes, they will taste awful), do some research (some great resources are out there Online) and overall make more & more espresso cappuccino and latte at home.
A Super Automatic espresso machine can help by instilling the confidence you need. With its built in conical burr grinder measuring the correct portion of ground espresso beans for the size of shot you want, Super Automatics let you set the strength and size of your drink. Their “robotic” nature then froths the milk AND even cleans up after themselves. I do not see any negatives here…well…maybe just one.
There is a learning curve since there are so many options available to you with your fully automatic espresso maker, but most come with a book and some even with a DVD! All you need to do is follow the instructions and they are nearly idiot-proof. Is that an important feature for you? If yes, then make certain that you buy from a company that lends you support. Not many out there help after purchase – kind of like you bought and you’re on your own. Be sure to ask if they make the service & repairs themselves or will they outsource you. If they outsource ask if they find the local service or it’s your responsibility. I can’t tell you how many clients we have earned over the last 9 years because the vendor just left them stranded.
So go on – be bold – Just like the espresso drinks you love so much. All it takes is some research and by reading this you’re already a step closer to an Automatic Espresso Machine.
